As the highly anticipated start date of the 2023 Inter-Secondary School Boys & Girls Athletic Championships inches closer, sports commentators and analysts are excited to see which schools will take home the coveted top titles. Male student athletes – some of whom have represented the country at international track and field meets, may tell you how this national event is possibly the most important in their career. And the track meets held across the island prior to Champs offer enough practice for them to sharpen their skill and identify their biggest competitors.

For the 2023 season, here are 5 school-boy athletes to watch at Champs 2023 which is set to go down from March 28-April 1:

1. Delano Kennedy

Many sports commentators are predicting that he will lead his Edwin Allen High School team to Champs victory. He’s a World Under 20 Championship silver medallist and the winner of the Under 17 400 metres race at the Carifta Games. His current season bests are 21: 21 seconds in the 200m and 46: 25 seconds in the 400m.

2.Kobe Lawrence

On the heels of his 2022 landmark achievement in shot put, this Calabar High School final year student is determined to demonstrate his advanced athletic skills at Champs 2023. Kobe is the first Jamaican junior to ever win a global medal in the shot-put event and at the Carifta Games, he secured victory in both the shot put and discus events. He’s destined to join the 2023 University of Oregon recruiting class later this year.

3. Adrian Kerr

Many eyes are on this Kingston College senior who surprised everyone when he smashed Sandrey Davison’s meet record in the 100m dash at the 2023 Sprint Fest. With his new personal best at 10: 45 seconds in the 100m and 20: 90 in the 200m, it is being predicted that Adrian’s performance will cause some upset at Champs 2023.

4.Rajy Reece

Spectators at the recently held Central Championship were stunned when the young Rajy Reece of St. Jago High School stopped the clock at 11: 22 seconds in the Class 3 100m dash, a record-breaking victory. While this schoolboy sprinter is at the start of his athletic career, his speed and agility make him a must-watch for Champs 2023.

5. Ajae Brown
Following his bronze medal placing in the Class 3 100m finals at Champs 2022, many are speculating that the young sprinter representing Ferncourt High School is gunning for gold in the 2023 staging of the high school track meet. Ajae enjoys a personal and season best of 11: 11 seconds in the 100m race.
