Some things in life they say, yuh affi bawn wid it (you have to be born with it) and Jamaicans like to think that their nationality automatically makes them good at certain things. Here are 5 things Jamaicans think they are naturally good at:
1. Entertaining Guests
Fi real, real! Jamaicans are the best hosts ever! As a child whose mother is expecting visitors, just know you’ll have to wake up extra early to help make the house spotless. Without a doubt, the good cutleries and china glassware will be coming out the cabinet to serve the guests! I mean plates you yourself have never used as a member of the household will take centrestage when the guests arrive.
Just good vibes all around once you are a welcomed guest!
2. Dancing
If you are a Jamaican without a rhythm then you have some soul-seeking, lineage-researching work to do. I’m not saying you need to be a professional like Ding- Dong or a Dancehall Queen, but you must can hold a vibes, “rock to di beat” and “siddung pon a riddim.”
3. Tun Wi Han’ Mek Fashion
Whether it’s cooking, decorating a space or donning an outfit, Jamaicans have this locked! Never have I seen a set of people so versed in creating something out of nothing!
Watch them turn three basic ingredients into a tasty, gourmet meal; a piece of fabric into a fashionable and exquisite outfit; or an old, rundown space into a comfortable, luxurious interior.
We are the undisputable, incontestable, absolute kings and queens of DIYs!
4. ‘Cussing/Tracing’
I’m no psychiatrist, but of this I’m sure… You shouldn’t argue with Jamaicans. It’s not good for your mental health. I don’t know if we’re an accidental by-product of contention but the ‘feisty’ words? They do come! And the pain they bring? Second to none.
Can’t say you were never warned.
5. Surviving/Hustling
If ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’ was a people, it would be Jamaicans. Memba mi tell yu! (I stand by these words).
We are resilient, hardworking and always on the go. We are a nation that lives ‘by the hook or the crook’ (any means possible) and we’re gonna make it happen – whatever it is.
