Jamaicans like to express themselves through fashion – always finding unique ways to wear clothes so they can stand out in the biggest crowd. But regardless of where on the island you were born, you must own or know someone who owns all or most of these clothing items:

1.Nighty or night clothes

Known to many around the world as pyjamas, most Jamaican children and every Jamaican woman have a set of comfortable clothes they wear at bedtime. Night clothes are often old garments that are no longer worn in public but many women have the traditional long, silky or cotton dress that have proven to be the least effective contraceptive.

2. Yaad clothes or judging clothes

These are usually old or stained garments that are only worn at home and absolutely unfit for formal events and public places.

3. Going out clothes

Naturally, every Jamaican has a set of clothes that they only wear in public – when going to town or to an event. These clothes are sacred and once used, they are often washed and tucked away for the next time trip.

4. Tie head

This one needs no explanation. All Jamaican women know the importance of a tie head, whether the hair is styled or not.

5. Plaid Underpants

We’re not referring to “boxers” now. We’re referring to the male plaid undergarments that were popular in Jamaica before boxers were a thing. Every Jamaican male has a few.

6. Face Rag/handkerchief

Some around the world know these as wash cloths, but Jamaican reserve these items to wipe sweat and keep themselves clean while they’re in public. They are usually kept in the best condition and whenever they are ready for use, they are folded nicely and spiced with perfume or cologne.
