Jamaica has a rich culture of unique and flavourful beverages that reflect the island’s tropical climate and agricultural heritage.
Here are some popular Jamaican drinks and what they say about those who prefer them:
1. Sorrel
As the name suggests, the main ingredient in this drink is sorrel-the sepal of a special type of hibiscus flower. Generally consumed in the Christmas season, sorrel is paired with ginger, rum, spices and sugar to make one of the island’s most popular beverages.Â
If sorrel is your favourite Jamaican drink then Christmas dinner in Jamaica nuh miss you a year time- regardless of where you are in the world. You love it especially spicy with lots of ginger burning your throat with every sip and swallow.
2. Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum
With 63% alcohol, if this is your most desired drink, you, my friend, are a drunkard. No question about it. Sunrise gets a glimpse of you giddily making your way home and the sun sets with you spewing expletives and disturbing the neighbourhood. As a matter of fact, your alias is probably ‘drunk a’ready’ because no matter the time, you’ve already had too much to drink.
3. Ginger Beer
This is a pungent, non-alcoholic drink with an invigorating flavour. It is made from ginger, sweetened with sugar and is usually carbonated.
If this is your drink of choice then you are probably an older woman who is always complaining about being bloated. Gas is your arch nemesis. You belch loudly in public and are not mindful of what onlookers have to say. Likewise, you use the old saying ‘let fart be free because it kill Mary Lee’ as an excuse to pass gas regardless of where you are or who you are around.
4. Red Stripe Beer
This is probably the top beer in Jamaica and can be found in every bar, corner shop and liquor store on the island.
If Red Stripe beer is your go-to drink, then millennial and Gen Zers refer to you as Uncs (short for uncle) or pops; you have a big, stiff gut (beer belly) in front you and possibly two or more gold teeth. Your laughs are loud and throaty and when you do, you throw you head backwards and your beer belly shakes.
5. Coconut Water
This natural drink comes from the inside of young coconuts and is most refreshing when served chilled.
If your fave thing to drink is coconut water then you are most likely an easy-going, health-conscious person with pure intentions. Jamaicans will tell you, ‘jelly wata wash off yu hawt’.
6. Cerasee Tea
This is a warm brew made from a bush called cerassee. More of a medicine than an enjoyable beverage, this tea has an extremely bitter taste. Simply put, if you have even a tad of liking for this drink, much more find favour in it, you cannot be trusted. You probably need divine intervention. I don’t know who hurt you but I’m here to tell you that deliverance is available.
