Jamaicans are very expressive but when it comes to love – let’s just say it isn’t something that rolls naturally off our tongues. Don’t get me wrong, we may love you, we just aren’t quick to say “I love you.” Instead of using those three words, Jamaicans have crafted a plethora of different ways to show you how much they care. Here are 5 ways Jamaicans say “I love you” without actually saying “I love you”:

1.Mi rate you

This phrase is commonly used by Jamaican men who are smitten by their lady but still want to maintain this tough exterior to prove to their friends and the rest of the world that they are not pushovers though they are madly in love with their women.

2. Mi hate him yuh si (*translation: I can’t stand him)

It’s not just Jamaican men who like to play tough when they are in love, the women do it too. If you ever hear a Jamaican woman say “mi hate him you si” in reference to her boyfriend, husband or babyfather, 9 times out of 10, she loves him dearly and would gladly have his children.

3. If they boast about you behind your back

Ladies and gentlemen, if you have a Jamaican spouse, parent, friend, sibling or child who sings your praises behind your back but never says it to your face, don’t worry you are deeply loved and respected by that person.

4. If they provide for you

This one is especially important for people who have never heard the words “I love you” from their Jamaican parents. We know they aren’t the best when it comes to vocalizing this emotion but just know that Acts of Service is their biggest love language and once they try their utmost to provide all your needs and most of your wants – they love you and they love you immensely. A lot of Jamaican men are also like this in relationships. They’ll never say they love you, but they’ll give you the world.

5. If no one is allowed to disrespect you in their presence

Again if you are in any kind of relationship or friendship with a Jamaican and no one is allowed to disrespect you or speak ill of you in their presence, just know that they love and respect you deeply. Jamaicans surely know the meaning of loyalty and they equate it with love so if they are constantly defending you in the presence of others, just know you are loved.

If any of these phrases or actions have been sent in your direction, just know that you are loved by a Jamaican. Let’s continue to show love to those around. Walk good!
