Same Name, Different Parishes: Bluefields

When most Jamaicans hear of Bluefields, their minds immediately drift to the beautiful community in Westmoreland, known for its pristine beach and rich history. Once a thriving Spanish settlement and a haven for pirates, today it’s a beloved spot where families gather to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea. But while Bluefields in Westmoreland may be the most famous, it’s not the only one in Jamaica. Last month we looked at the Amities across Jamaica now here’s a look at all the Bluefields across the island.

1. Bluefields Sink, St. Elizabeth
  • Location: St. Elizabeth Parish
  • Description: Hidden within the rugged terrain of St. Elizabeth, near the communities of Maggotty and Siloah, Bluefields Sink is an intriguing part of a larger cave system that stretches beneath the parish. This sinkhole, surrounded by the lush karst landscape, offers a gateway into Jamaica’s subterranean mysteries. While lesser-known, it’s a haven for adventurous spelunkers and those drawn to the island’s natural secrets.
  • Highlights: Proximity to Windsor Cave, Coffee River Cave, and the rural communities of Maggotty and Siloah.

2. Bluefields, St. Ann
  • Location: St. Ann Parish
  • Description: Situated in the lush hills of St. Ann, Bluefields is a small, lesser-known community perched at an elevation of around 1,837 feet. Unlike its Westmoreland namesake, this Bluefields is shrouded in mystery, nestled between the localities of Waterloo and Outon. The high elevation offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it feel like a hidden gem in Jamaica’s heartland. The story of this Bluefields is less about bustling beaches and more about the serene, almost forgotten beauty of Jamaica’s interior. Here, time seems to stand still, and the whisper of the wind through the trees carries echoes of a past where the community thrived quietly away from the coasts.
  • Highlights: Tranquil environment, scenic views, proximity to natural attractions.
3. Bluefields, Westmoreland

  • Location: Westmoreland Parish
  • Description: Nestled along the southern coast of Westmoreland and located just off the main road between Savanna-la-Mar and Black River, this is the Bluefields most Jamaicans are acquainted with. But are you also acquainted with its history and dark past? In the 17th century, when the Spanish first settled here, they believed they had found paradise. But when the British drove them out, the bustling town slowly faded, and the bay became a secret haunt for pirates who used its calm waters as a hideout. It’s said that under the cover of night, these marauders would slip into the bay, their ships laden with stolen treasures, and hold wild feasts on the shore. Today, Bluefields has traded its pirate ships for fishing boats, but the allure remains. The community is known for its stunning beach, where the crystal-clear waters kiss the powdery white sand, framed by lush, rolling hills. Bluefields isn’t just a place; it’s a feeling—a connection to the past that lingers in the present, making it one of the most captivating corners of Jamaica.
  • Highlights: Bluefields Beach, local fishing village, nearby attractions such as the Appleton Estate Rum Distillery.
All In All

Jamaica’s Bluefields locations each offer their unique charm and beauty, from the bustling beach scene in Westmoreland to the serene countryside of St. Elizabeth and the mountainous landscapes of Portland. Whether you’re looking for a vibrant beach experience or a quiet retreat, each Bluefields provides a different slice of Jamaica’s diverse landscape. Explore these areas to experience the island’s natural splendor and cultural richness.
