- That One Shopkeeper Who Never Hesitated To Trust You Snacks
If you remember being able to go to a specific shop on your street and request snacks without paying, you probably encountered one of these angels. Most of them rarely even charged your parents because they knew times were tough. They were more than just a vendor – they were a pillar of support, a beacon of kindness in the community. Their actions may have seemed small, but their impact was immeasurable.
- The Small Business Owners Who Favored All The Low Income Youths
If you lived in a lower-income community, you probably know of a few are small business owners who never hesitated to offer young men especially odd jobs to keep them off the streets once they ended school. These entrepreneurs understand the importance of providing opportunities and mentorship to the next generation. Through their businesses, they not only created economic opportunities – they were nurturers of potential and facilitators of hope.
- The Schoolyard Vendors Who Became Informal Mentors
If you ever attended a dual shift school you know of the schoolyard vendors who gave us a spot next to their stalls to relax before our shifts started. These women and sometimes men were more than just sellers of sweets and snacks, for a lot of young girls and boys they became unofficial mentors, imparting valuable life lessons in those late-morning conversations. Sure, it might have guaranteed them consistent buyers, but the wisdom gained from those interactions was priceless.

Teachers as a whole are true Jamaican Heroes and deserve more but not all teachers were created equally. Shout out to those teachers who lowered or completely waived evening class fees so that students in need could still benefit from the extra lessons. Their selflessness and dedication to their students’ well-being are nothing short of admirable. They understood that additional help should be a privilege for all who need it.
- The Teachers Providing Essential Resources
And we can’t forget to big up the teachers who go the extra mile, photocopying textbook pages so that every student has access to reading and study materials. Some even go as far as giving students their own textbooks – a gesture that speaks volumes about their commitment to ensuring every child has the tools they need to succeed.
- The Rare Taxi Driver Who Cares
And let’s not forget about the rare taxi driver who didn’t hesitate to take students to and from school even on days when they didn’t have the fare. In a world where acts of kindness can sometimes feel like a rarity, these drivers stand out as beacons of aggressive but welcomed compassion. Even when they chided you for spending all your money in the evenings.
- Community Volunteers and Mentors
Let’s not overlook community members who volunteer their time to mentor and support youth. Through programs led by these individuals, young people are empowered and uplifted. Whether tutoring sessions, sports programs, or career workshops, these mentors make a tangible difference in Jamaica’s youth.
